M11 wrx ej25 Engine Rebuild

Postby neptune11 » Wed Jun 01, 2016 10:54 pm

So after much deliberation & numerous discussions with GotItRex, Tuspeed, Top Torque, & a few friends within the club. I've finally decided to go ahead with the services of Top Torque!
It hasn't been an easy choice, but just one that needed to be made, & hopefully I can keep all happy..

So my car will go in on Monday 6th June. And into the rebuild will go :

Mahle Forged Pistons
Manley h-beam Rods
ARP Head Stud kit
XP Performance Bearings
MLS -R Head Gaskets
Kevlar timing belt kit
Complete gasket kit
Water pump
Oil Cooler
Killer B oil pick up & Baffle
Iridium spark plugs
Group N engine mounts..

And obviously all the machining work, cleaning, boring & honing, pressure test, ect will all be in there.....
And will no doubt give me great platform for some big gains..!!

And then, back to GotItRex for a much deserved retune check!!

So fun & interesting times ahead...

Cheers..

I had TopTorque set up my EJ25 shortblock when I cooked a headgasket 2 years ago. CPs, ARP h/studs, (left OEM rods), XP bearings. I already had a KillerB pickup and replaced the waterpump with the OEM cast version (vs OEM pressed steel).

I'm only running a modest ~19psi through a VF43 on mine, but at least I don't have to worry about the engine not being up for it.

Good to know & great to hear that...!!
What other supporting mods do you have!!
I'm still debating what rods to run also??

It depends on your end goal. For me I had decided I wasn't planning on making a barely driven dyno queen -my power goal to being no more than 220-230 atw long term, daily driven - I was after fun reliability not a money pit.
As such, 2.5L OEM pistons were clearly an unwise choice to replace given their unpredictable nature over 200kW. But stock rods were happy enough to support my end-goal power so I decided to leave them. Upgraded bearings and ARP headstuds were a bit of a no-brainer. The OEM bearings aren't bad, but if you're replacing them and they're similar cost anyway, something more heavy duty isn't a bad idea in my logic.

At current, the power list is:
-CPs
-OEM rods
-XP bearings
-ARP2000 h/studs
-Stock airbox
-X3E/"AVO" silicon intake
-VF43 @19psi
-GR STi TMIC
-TGV deletes
-OEM/standard 565cc (dark blue) injectors
-8mm Phenolic spacers
-OEM headers
-AVO TBE (although soon to change to an old Mangaflow muffer I have as the AVO is a little too noisey for my liking)

Nets just under 200atw on 98RON, which is plenty for running to work and the shops.
Toying with doing an e-flex conversion, which would allow me to run any mix of 100% 98 to 100% E85 and should give a healthy ++ in power on the corn juice whilst retaining the long-trip functionality of 98; at that point I'd be limited by VF43 and/or injectors however still undecided if I really want to dump $500 on the efforts or not. At least I know the engine is capable if I ever want to.

Hey Campbell,

Thanks for that mate...

I'm only looking for about the same power also, be more than happy at around 220kws-230kws...!

I've got AVO dump pipe, into a Hyperflow Cat back..!!
Verti Cooler
COBB C.A.I.
AVO 3" silicon intake
COBB 3 port solenoid
SuperPro engine pitch mount

And the rest is stock present..

So perhaps I can run stock rods also..?:

Potentially.
Look, ultimately it's your choice to make based on pros/cons (read: benefit/costs). TopTorque recommended they be upgraded, and I acknowledge they did that as a responsible engine builder and with their and my best interests at heart (to make a long-term reliable engine), and I took that into consideration.
I'm sure there are many people who will disagree with me, but I think the stock rods are fine for those power levels.
I know they are most likely the weakest link of the engine (no pun intended), but with the info I've absorbed over the years I was comfortable with my decision.

Warwick also tuned mine.

Has anyone else got any advice, opinions, or experience on what they've had on engine builds??

So the engine has been pulled down nerd

And so it now seems that clutch will soon be cooked, so it makes sense as its a good time to be replaced

Excedy H/D clutch or Stage 2 Competition Clutch? Is the question!!

:boxing: So I picked up my little Blue Beast yesterday from Top Torque, and was very excited to hear the "RUMBLE" again (without knock) and to be back on the road !! punk pimp ...

Well it now has a rock solid engine, forged internals, upgraded oil pick and baffle, GrpN engine mounts, NGK Iridium spark plugs, Excedy Heavy Duty organic clutch, and all the other parts mentioned above!!

Yes, this hasn't been a cheap or easy process, communicating back and forwards between workshop and Adam @Tuspeed..Ha
But in the end, all definitely well worth it..

The Pistons were pretty well shot, and a few of the bearings had certainly seen better days  (Have some photos if you wish, can email to you)
Workshop and Machining photos will be sent to me soon!!

I was very surprised to see how sloppy, ugly and bulky the OEM Engine mounts looked, only wish I'd taken photos of them to show the comparison to the GrpN Mounts.. :tumbleweed:

All I can say now is HAPPY DAYS :drunk:

I look forward to seeing you all at SubiNats, as I'm taking the safe and cheaper option at the moment SHOW n Shine.
Ufortunately we don't get to see all the polished and shiny bits inside the engine..  :(

Hey... Just wondering how the WRX is going a year on? I'm shopping around for someone to rebuild my EJ255 and Top Torque is one of the options. Any major dramas since you had the work done?

Hey Sab,

No mate, the engine is going great guns thanks. I've only done Rexmas, & just recently SubiNats since the build & a few spirited cruise days with the club.
I got a boost & oil pressure gauge to help keep an eye on things.
I've been running a Grimspeed Air Oil separator, but this was not quite enough for the demands of P.I on Sunday, & had some blow by.
So will now be adding & Catch can & also looking at Moshimoto all aluminum radiator.
GotItRex or Top TORQUE, definitely the way to go...
Depends on what you're looking for..?
I only wish I'd got the Air pump & tgv deletes while getting rebuilt.. oh well..

Good to hear... I probably saw your car in the pits over the weekend then. Is it the blue one with Verticooler?

I'm not planning on going too crazy as it's my daily and I do about 500kms a week so reliability is my priority. Got a blown head gasket so may as well strengthen up the internals while it's out. So I'll probably just go ARP bolts, forged pistons and still undecided about rods. For the power I'm chasing, 220/230ish I'm told it's not necessary.

Would love to take it to GIR as Waz tuned it and more conveniently located, but getting it booked in could be a challenge. Haven't spoken to TT yet but good to know they have good reviews.

Yep, that was me bud...
World rally Blue hatch, sharing garage with Spadam & next to Kurt...!
If not sure on Rods, you could always do ARP rod bolts??
If I'd had the patience & time to wait, plus the issue of trying to get my car to GIR, I certainly would've gone there.
As this is where I go for servicing, upgrades & tunes...
Just more convenient to be under one roof...
Top Torque have built a lot of solid engines...
You can't go wrong either way...
I'll be no doubt selling my air oil separator, so let me know if you're interested?
