'13 STI dump and mid or full TBE?

Postby specr » Sat Jan 21, 2017 10:43 am

Howdy, if this has been covered I'll gladly welcome any links you have...

Basically I want extra power but to keep the car as quiet as stock. I was considering going 3" dump and mid then stock mufflers. Has anybody had this set up as well as a full TBE to compare? I want the majority of my power at mid revs but also don't want to sacrifice TOO much power at the top end.

I'll be running the stock VF48 with 3 port, CAI, silicon intake, and tune of course.

Any dyno comparisons would be the icing on the cake ;)

Hey mate, if you can wait??? My car MY13 WRX hatch is currently totally stock except a HKS air filter element. Booked at Pulse Racing on Feb 2nd to get a dump pipe, highflow cats and dyno tuning, retaining stock cat back exhaust. I'll let you know how it goes! Andy

Specr,

I've done my exhaust in stages guys and can definitely confirm that the mid-pipe is a restriction. Mines a 2011 WRX Sedan.

Going FROM: Aftermarket DP + OEM Mid *TO*: Aftermarket DP + 3" Mid, on e85 I picked up about 15kw peak and more mid-range (and better spool).

My colleague on his 2015 STi also had the same experience. On Petrol at Got It Rex his car made 180kw with a tune + Invidia dump pipe. Adding the Invidia mid section and mufflers picked him up just over 10kw.

Regarding the impact of just the mufflers (or keeping stock ones) - I don't expect that they are too much of a restriction but can't confirm.

That's really good info man, thanks!

I really want to keep my car sounding stock but the thought of any power loss and spool makes me want to go the full TBE. Maybe I'll try just keeping the mufflers stock and see

Hey mate, got mine done today. If there is restriction in the cat back section it can't be too great I would say. It sounds very much the same but picked up 60kw @tw. The boys that dynoed it couldn't quite believe it, it's more than they usually see from this level of mods. Ran 131kw stock as a rock this morning, 190kw this arvo on 15psi. Not sure how different the sti might be?

Pulls really well now :)

Btw the down pipe removed both stock cats and replaced them with 1 highflowed cat. All that's left of the stock exhaust is the resonator and rear mufflers (hatch).

I have the before and after dyno graphs, will upload soon.

Cheers

Andy

I call BS. A 45% power increase (59kw or 79HP) from just an exhaust......... no way. Did they also do a tune while they had it on the dyno?

Yes, full dyno tune. Plus replaced all fluids including gearbox, diff etc and serviced the car. They also mentioned the before run was at the lower end of expected for a stock car, 10-15kw down on some other MY11-13's they have done so it's possible the knock sensors could be holding it back slightly on the before run. Either way it's a solid gain for a car that still sounds & looks standard.

195kw for a 2011 wrx seems pretty normal/good depending on the dyno.
Your stock run is definitely on the low side they would usually be more in the 140-150kw mark I would think? Stock stis are about 160 and with exhaust and tune usually crack 200
My old forester picked up 45kw with just an exhaust on the little td04 turbo so the vf52 should be easily good enough for 195.
Did you upgrade the intercooler? So keen to get mine done now!!
Is it still sounding stock or a bit more of a rumble?

No other mods specr, I'd say go for it!! It does not sound much different at all, slightly more maybe and a very slight crackle on deceleration when you give it a rev but you really have to be listening out for it.

Yeah perfect! I'm wanting to keep the STI looking and sounding stock so I'm going to go with a 3" dump and mid and keep the stock mufflers. Will probably do CAI, silicon intake, and 3 port for better spool and boost management too

I had the same dilemma specr, so I did some research and went for full TBE with a second straight through muffler. Best of both worlds. It's nice & quiet when cruising and only gets loud when I open it up. Had this setup for over 2yrs and has not attracted any attention with the cops.

Yeah I had a chat to MSR and he suggested the invidia q300 with a mid muffler but I'd rather save money and just keep the stock mufflers

Just as a follow up to this, did you get your car done specr?

How did it go, what mods did you go with?

Mine now has a process west intake and verticooler plus 3 port boost solenoid and is re tuned to 17psi. 210kw@tw.

The car has taken a backseat whilst saving up for travel so nup.

I purchased a Q300 catback around March but only put it on about 2 months ago (despite saying I wanted to keep the stock mufflers). The sound out of the Q300 is perfect for me, seriously purrs along at 130kmh in 6th gear and opens up nicely when you go heavy on the right foot. I'm sure with a dump there might be more noise but if I were to mod further I would go the full Invidia TBE for sure.

You must be enjoying those extra KWs and the induction noise from the intake!

Yeah mate, the car has pretty effortless power delivery now and it's a real Jekyll and Hyde with the stock cat back exhaust, dramatic change in noise when you get on boost!

Travel is a good investment mate, I did a lot when I was younger and never regretted a cent I spent on it (I'm 43 now). There will always be time for wasting money on cars when you get back :)

Yeah I miss having a 200+kw car, my Forester was a beast and I thought a stock STI would be fast enough but I guess you always want more! Especially with the stock tune, it feels soooo sluggish compared to the Forester

I know I'd regret spending money on my car when there's a tonne of travel to be done so wasting money on it after sounds like a good plan
