Advice needed please on engine and turbo replacement MY08 2.5turbo

Postby Martoon27 » Sat Aug 26, 2017 12:17 pm

Hi guys,
I'm not an expert but just a guy who likes driving my WRX. I've been advised that I need a new turbo and engine!!!!

MY08 hatch. 2.5l turbo owned since new. No mods. 145000kms. One owner and used as a daily drive. Good condition throughout generally. Car serviced as scheduled and driven normally only.

A few months ago I noticed a slight noise under acceleration uphill. Nothing much but worthy of mention at the next service. Then a month ago I got the engine light, traction control light and flashing cruise light. I took the car immediately to my mechanic who has serviced the car since new. He checked out the code and found P0011. He looked at a couple of obvious things and advised that Subaru need to get involved.

SUBARU Description of P0011
The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the Oil Control Valve (OCV) to regulate the intake camshaft angle. As a result of the angle change, the engine timing is advance or retard. Optimizing engine timing will help the engine improve torque and fuel economy, and the exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system includes the Oil Control Valve (OCV) and VVT controller. The ECM detects the actual intake valve timing using signals from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and performs feedback control.

As the dealer could not make the car make the noise or find anything else, the dealers response was to clear the code and tell me to come back if the code returns. This happened within a few kms and the dealership head mechanic then came for a test drive. Under acceleration of about 5000rpm up a hill in second, big noise! We limped the car back to the dealership with dreadful noises coming from the engine.
The end result is a blown turbo (described to me as “a fair bit of play in the bearing”) and an engine replacement. Quote for this is just under $10K. I was disappointed as I had twice taken the car for mechanical repairs and I still ended up with a "dead car".

So now I need your advice please as experts…
1 Should I get the repair done at all? Subaru offered no trade.
2 How much might I expect to get at a wreckers?
3 If I repair (my preferred option), should I go with a new or reco engine?
4 What is the availability of reco engines. I’m told by Subaru that they could not find anything suitable. (But they would say that I think) If available, how much cheaper are they to a new short motor?
5 Should I stay with the dealer for the repairs or are there better options? I live in Geelong but could pay for a tow to Melbourne for the right service provider and outcome.
6 Given the size of the repair, should I consider “extras” to build performance? Part of me feels that ending up with an improved performance outcome would make the whole exercise more worthwhile. However, I don’t want to throw good money after bad either.

I have a lot of questions and I will value your advice as WRX experts.
Thanks for your time guys.
Cheers
Martin

You need to find a specialist. Get away from the dealership. Some nsw members should have a list for you. You could be you need a timing belt kit too. Also could be sensors. A new short block is about $3200 from carmodsaustralia right now. Not too expensive.

Thanks mv75 for your answer.
Timing belt is only 20000kms old and was done when specified. I'm not sure if this can be reused or whether it is part of the whole rebuild the dealership has quoted. I haven't seen a written quote yet as the number was over the phone and the total to get back on the road. I am assuming the timing belt etc is included.
I'm looking at specialists as I understand that there will be firms that deal with this sort of thing better than a Car dealership which is mainly concerned with selling cars and servicing to the book. They might have the skills but I'm sure the situation of a whole new engine is not usual for them.
I'm still hopeful someone from Geelong or Melbourne has some good local advice about this though.

You dont say where in Melb you are but Gotitrex in Sunshine will give you some no Bull5h17 advice on the options available.
That would be my first point of call even if I had to tow the car there.
Good luck with it

Thanks for the advice. I'm in Geelong and the car is not drivable I think. It will depend on how dismantled the dealership has left it after their inspection. I'm happy to tow to Sunshine anyway if this is a good solution. Their web site suggests it's a perfect place to take the car.
Thanks heaps.

Those guys look pretty good, definitely go there. :) A Subaru specialist is generally so good. You should be able to re-use the timing belt you had done.
