Steering rack/knuckle issue after bushing replacement - resolved.

Postby mrjarrodcthompson » Sat Oct 14, 2017 11:55 am

Help please!

I've replaced the three steering rack bushings with Whiteline ones on my 2011 WRX. In order to allow a little more movement of the rack I loosened this bolt/clamp where the rack connects to the bottom of the steering knuckle. After putting it all back together the steering is very sloppy (and un-drivable).

Before I started, I marked the position but didn't pay enough attention to how it sat/mated together..

Two things:
1. Does the splined section actually sit INSIDE the fitting? I couldn't get them to sit inside the clamp section..
2. Upon re-inspection I seem to have stripped the bolt, so it simply might not have been tightening the clamp enough? (thread on the clamp side still seems fine)

Thanks!

Apologies - had lots of trouble with images.

Anyway - it turned out that yes, the knuckle needs to be fully engaged on the splines. In fact, you will not get the bolt through properly unless it is fully engaged.
To do so, I ended up loosening the corresponding bolt at the TOP of the steering knuckle in order to get some wiggle room, which worked. The bottom bolt was actually stripped by the splines and was not actually cross threaded.

All resolved now after much frustration... all I need now it a re-alignment as my steering angle is off...

If you've damaged the knuckle (thread), replace it with an STi knuckle.
The STi are solid and will give better response. No rubber bushing in it.
