Clunking and Popping H&R Springs

Postby Axeki » Sun Oct 01, 2017 8:27 am

I've recently had a set of H&R springs installed in my 06 WRX, basically ever since I picked the car up from the workshop they have made a lot of creaking, popping and clunking sounds, its very noticeable and have had other people comment on what that sound is after getting into my car. It happens when I go slowly over speedbumps, when I reverse or go up a driveway, when im going quickly over uneven road surfaces, practically almost all the time :\

Any idea what's going on? I'm thinking about putting the stock springs back on since I didn't have this problem with the stockies.. however I'd prefer an upgrade over stock if possible.

If it’s in the front try backing off the center nut (strut nut) and nipping it up with less pressure as I have found this to cause noises when over tightened for example when reassembled with a rattle gun. Otherwise you can try jacking the car up to take the weight off, grab the spring and try to reseat it. Good luck and let us know how you go.

Should not do this mate, it's highly unlikely it's the spring at fault, something is wrong with the fitting. Maybe not seated correctly?

Took the car to a local mechanic that had a look, apparently I need to change all four struts and strut tops, was recommended the KYB excel G's to go with these springs. The strut tops in front look perfectly fine to me, no cracks or anything... do you guys think the kyb excel gs are worth putting in there over the stock units?

I'm not so sure the strut tops would be the problem if they were ok before, what area are you in and we might be able to advise you of a dependable mechanic/workshop?

You could try Springy Motors.

or
HPF Dandenong

Make sure you let them know someone from the WRX club suggested them.

+1 to the advice above.

I can tell you in my rx7 track car I had spring binding/popping noises from one of my front springs. I reseated the thing several times, could not work it out. Eventually it turned out the strut was damaged in the spring perch area, a rotary Mechanic identified it and repaired it and it resolved the issue. I relate this info for you, however I don't know that this really makes sense in your situation as it seems pretty unlikely in a much newer car that all your struts could all be damaged?
