Need help with ECU options, GC8 WRX

Postby TastyMuffin » Fri Feb 19, 2016 2:12 pm

Hey guys,
new to the forum and subbies so be gentle.

Me and my friends have recently bought a seized 98 gc8 wrx from a towing place and its had the usual bolt-ons done to it, full exhaust, headers, bigger turbo (td-04?), front mount that should be on a vl... MBC, recirc BOV and the maf replaced with a map. It also looks like there was a piggy back ecu plugged in or something that has been removed prior to us owning it.

Now the problem is, the car didnt come with keys so we cant start it. So now we're looking into a new/used ecu to throw in there to get it all working. Would yous reccomend a stock ecu remapped, or just an aftermarket one thrown in and tuned to suit?

ps. if anyone has a stock ecu and keys they're looking to sell pm me.

Thanks for the help guys

You can't remap the older pre-MY99 ECU's so you would need to aftermarket if you want something tuned. Apexi PowerFC's are always good options
If it was me my first port of call would be getting the car running with a stock ECU to confirm everything works as it should.
A stock ECU will be fine as longer as you don't drive the car too hard and keep the boost low. Just run waste gate pressure. i.e. run a vac line direct from the turbo to the waste gate if you want to be extra safe. BTW if it has a TD04 that turbo never came out on the MY98. They had TD05.
The older I get the slower I drive.

I cant remember but the turbo had a plate on it and we scraped it off and it had a different brand underneath, I cant remember which one was which but one was CBRD. Ill have a better look at it soon.

So yeah if anyones selling a stock ecu with keys or a maf pm me

Hey TM

Bad news on the ecu,
It's seems I have sold it already,
Have the Maf still

Re-keys, I am pretty sure the ecu is not that smart, it's the era of rip one out thro a different one in, pre BCM body control modules that link immobilizer key n ecu's

Happy to be corrected, but I never had any issue with keys and ecu replacements
