Adam's 06 STi (ABSTI)

Postby ABSTI » Sun Apr 19, 2015 12:56 pm

Probably about time I posted up some pictures, I haven't managed to get any worthy of posting.

I've had my 2006 STi for just under a year now, moving up from a MY98 Club Spec Evo II - some things I love & some things I hate compared to the classics, probably shouldn't have gone with black though! hmmm

Most of the mods were on the car when I bought it. I'll probably be leaving it as is, however wouldn't mind looking at the intake side of things.

- Set of forged pistons
- AVO450
- Turbo XS TMIC
- APS BOV
- MRT Turbo Back Exhaust
- Upgraded fuel pump
- Front and rear Whiteline swaybars & kit
- Pink springs
- Front lip
- Pioneer DVD player/DAB head unit & front speakers

Currently running approx 220kw at wheels (although may have had any issue with leaking Y pipe :chair: )

Well, probably a good time for an update. About a month ago my car overheated and ended up needing to be towed to Aleck at Got It Rex. We initially suspected that it was an all too common head gasket, also keep in mind that we previously suspected the head gasket was on the way. Engine came out and to our dismay we found a crack in the cylinder/block. To make matters worse, the AVO450S fitted up had crack in the rear housing.
To put all this in context, the car had done 130k and was rebuilt with a set of forged pistons at 30k - we also found that the original head studs were reused when rebuilt with 'Aries' pistons!
It just goes to show, you never know when you're buying a car! Big thanks to Aleck At Got It Rex.

Isn't it frustrating when people try to scrimp and save a few bucks on things like head studs ? And you can never tell if it was the workshop or the guy who owned it who couldn't afford to do it properly... Our sti had been 1/2 done like that..1/2 the previous owners fault, used old head studs but also the builders had put the timing belt tensioners on the wrong way..Cost big $$$ to do it all again properly because of the damage the studs had allowed. Hopefully you will get out of it without too much pain..

It has played on my mind as to whether it was the previous owner or builder, probably a combination of both. At least now I know it's going to be done right, chucking a couple of goodies on in the process - it's certainly an expensive exercise.

I decided to get a whole new block and drop in a set of forged pistons in, I had some big doubts in my mind about using anything from the old engine - it also saves us having to crack it open. The car's a daily and absolute max I'd want to push would be <250kw. I'm really unsure as to how the damage even occurred given it was only pushing about 220kw hmmm.

To provide a bit of an update on my build journal;

New engine now run in sporting the ATP STi Silver with a few other tasty mods, huge improvement with the STi Silver over the AVO450S I was running. The car comes on full boost 1k+ earlier and makes more power with less boost!

I also fitted up a new set of wheels in satin black with RE003's punk

BIG Thanks to Aleck, Vin & Ray from Got It Rex, Kyp from ATP & Adam from Tuspeed!

Looks immaculate! Not normally a fan of painting the wheels black, but they suit the car really well. How do you find the 003's? Any idea how much power you are making now?

Thanks Jonoe, haven't had the RE003's long enough but have been hearing a lot of great things about them! The car is making roughly 225kw's on 20PSI, it's making full boost by 3500RPM which keeps it punchy .

The car can probably make a lot more, my main goal was to replace the AVO450S with something that spools quick but not necessarily make huge power (the car is daily) - Most importantly SAFE!
