So I made some more progress with the car this weekend. Hopefully i can find some more spare time to get the car ready for the 30th.

I am also looking at getting some cooling/induction air out from under the bonnet. Does anyone know anywhere in Melbourne that i can get some louvers ?

I was going to try and cut/plastic weld the NACA ducts to create louvers, But i think that is going to be more work than it is worth.

Cheers,
Kevin

Nice one Kev, coming along nicely. A word of advice with the flat floor, you want at least a aluminium RHS every 30-40 mm laterally and you want a rivett every 50-100 mm and you want it supported by the car in at least 8 places. I'm up to version 4 of the flat floor (250 kph at PI and Calder stress it pretty hard) ... it's a very hard thing to get enough strength in there without getting too heavy. You need to be able to stand on any point and not have it flex or it will struggle.

Thanks for the advise mate, The section shown is not fixed off yet. I have 20x20 and 25x25 sections spanning from skirt to skirt and bolted to the pan every 600mm. In regards to the weight i am a little disappointed with how much reinforcement i have put in, I just hope the gains are worth it.

I am considering testing and fine tuning it, then using it as a mould for fibreglass.

Do you have any veins in yours ? do you have any pictures or data ?

Kind regards,
Kevin Averill

The amount of weight does creep up when you need strength - I've considering using steel supports as ally just gets too much and too heavy. Don't have any pics handy sorry.

I won't make it to Sandown next weekend but i have booked in for round 4 to keep me motivated.

With the under tray 90% sealed i spent the day working on louvers to getting some air out from between the car and the pan.

Does anyone have any opinions on the best way of extracting cooling and induction air from under the hood ? I was thinking about putting louvers about 200mm back from the front edge of the hood, However this would mean some of that warmer air would make its way into the intercooler. I don't imagine it would make much difference, but I'm open to some advice on this.

Cheers,
Kevin

This is what I'm considering for the extraction.

The new rotors and calliper rebuild kit have arrived along with some knock back springs for the brake pistons . The rotors are really impressive, and really light.
hopeful the rotors will help to keep some heat out of the hubs and the knock back springs should help with some of the brake knock off at Sandown.

Almost ready for Phillip Island!
We had a bit of a panic when we couldn't select any gears when the car was running, It turned out the clutch was stuck. We had to bump the car then let it stall which seemed to disengage the plates.

The flat floor looks good. You should talk to me about aero. I have just made my sheet road car the fastest MX5 to ever lap Phillip island. I bet it is quicker than most of the WRX club, and it's on its original 212,000 km motor. Oem Mazda turbo, manifold, down pipe and 2.25" exhaust.

i don't have a flat floor, would be nice. Just a splitter/under tray up to the front axle. A rear wing and camm tail on the boot, some side skirts, vented bonnet and the fastback.

Good work with the mx5 mate. Are you going to Phillip island this weekend? Ill be looking at a wing for mine soon, Im thinking about going with a swan neck mount. Have you got any advice ? or suppliers ?

This is a crude drawing of the current aero set up (side view)

I think your rear diffuser should be curved at the floor pan join. How can air stay attached?

I will be at p.i on Saturday. Tomorrow..

Swan neck is good. But can be harder to fabricate.
