My Build 2006 WRX STI

Postby Mark95Mark » Wed Dec 09, 2015 12:26 pm

Hello All ..

Just thought I would share with you my build / Engine Modifications on my 2006 WRX STI ..
Feel free to give an opinion on this ..
Firstly the reasons for this re-build was due to 2 Pistons having cracked Ring Land Problems ..

The bore's only required Honing (I was Lucky) The motor had only done just over 50,000 km's ..

Pistons - Forged CP Pistons ( Compression Ratio 9:0 - 1 ) then with a quarter of compression added (Shaving the Heads) it should be around 9:25 - 1 ..
Connecting Rods - Manly H-Beam ....
Heads / Ported
1000 cc Injectors
ACL Bearings
ARP Head studs ( Not the aged ones )
Under Driven Pulley Kit
TGV Deletion
After Market Exhaust System (CATLESS - This is about to change)
GTX3071R Turbo
Front Mount Intercooler
Silicon Air Intake
EcuTek (Stage 2)
3 port boost solenoid (Grimspeed)

Exedy heavy Duty Clutch ..

All motor assembly work was done by Myself and a mate and tuned at S&J Automotive

Runs 2 fuel Maps ( E85 / 98 RON) Running E85 and Conservative tune "285WKW"

Owner of the same - what caused the 2 Pistons to have cracked Ring Land Problems? Thanks.

Hey Mate .. Really not to sure .. If you hear and believe all the stories it would be due to the standard pistons being the weak point of the motor .. Especially when you start upgrading the ECU and Turbo etc .. It happens ..

Yes that seems to be widely accepted. What I was getting at is: what mods and power was your engine running when it failed?

FWIW. I've been advised to stay below 190kW atw with stock internals and 98octane. Esp if dong any track days.

G'day mate,
Create a free photo bucket account, iirc you get 2gb free storage.
Drag n drop from your file explorer to the upload dialogue.
Click share within your gallery on the photo you want to post & click the IMG text box on the right hand side.
(no need to add the html tags, it is already done for you)
Control V & all should be good ((hit preview to check content) I do this as standard practice these days as I almost inadvertently posted a wrong pic on here which was intended for a certain very limited audience only))

As per posts above, sounds like an awesome build mate & keen for pics!

Hey Alpha Dog,

The upgrades to the Motor when the Pistons developed the cracked Ring Lands where as below ..
Upgraded Exhauset System ( With a Cat Converter )
Larger TMIC Hyperflow
EcuTek (Stage 2)
Cold Air Intake
Increased Fuel Pump Size

As I don't have the Dyno sheet on me .. and this was done before I bought the car .. On memory it had around 200 wkw Hmm maybe a bit less .. thats a guess mate .. 98Ron

Thanks Mark. Sounds like the advice I have was right, although it depends on the tune.

I assume the symptoms of the cracked ring lands were high oil use, blue smoke, low compression, knock... then bang?

Obviously I'm curious re any external signs... I have similar mods, 190kW and a plan to go harder with Motorsport. Thanks.

Hey Mate,
Even though I never wanted this to happen as it was going to cost me money I think I was going to do these sorts of Mod's in the future ..
I was extremely lucky or lets say very anal when it comes to my car so I dont miss to much .. The oil usage wasnt all that bad .. But it did blow a little bit of smoke .. nothing to great to cause me to much concern .. But what lead me to this problem is one day when I was turning the car over to start it I noticed it had a down cylinder .. As you know these cars have very distinctive compression strokes and I just happened to notice it missed one .. Then did the compression test / Leak down and yep had a cylinder down .. When I pulled the motor down I was lucky that the cracked ring lands stayed in between the piston comp rings and didnt dislodge .. So all that was need was a hone to the bores and I was still able to put the standard Diameter pistons back in ..
So a little info for you .. Be very wise in what turbo you choose and whether you put a FMIC on the car ..
Im still unsure with my Turbo choice and FMIC choice or even whether it needed it ( The FMIC that is ) .. And my initial plan was to rotate the Turbo but I got slack and didnt do it .. That was a mistake on my behalf and will be doing that mod in the new year .. Hoping to bring it just over 300 wkw ..

Nice.. I like the painted rocker covers.. Little things like that are always worth while. When you come to sell it, that is the sort of thing that will get you a good price..

Hello All,

If anyone was interested .. I just completed some more mod's to my car and had it tuned Friday just gone ..
I added a cold air intake and added a 4" high flow Cat Converter .. Tuned on E85 fuel and managed 301 wkw ( Thanks to Sean @ S&J Auto )
Also for a test I painted my wheels black using Plasti Dip .. with some very surprising results ..
When I work out how to upload picture's I'll do it ..

Regards,

Mark
