Zee's MY15 WRX

Postby dbz » Thu Jan 21, 2016 6:30 pm

Hey everyone, thought i would start my own little photo gallery and "build thread" even though i haven't really done that much to it but its my day off and i thought to document what my car looked like before , now and what i plan for the future popcorn So i had my car since April 2014, bought it new when i first read about the changes being made to the MY15 models, got quite excited about it, as on paper it looked really good -

Image

Image

But have to say i didn't quite like the "Evo X" resemblance as my mate has one and it was an Evo X i actually wanted to buy initially with its SST transmission, but i needed a practical car and the Evo had about as much boot space as a BRZ so that was a deal breaker. But i am very happy with the MY15 WRX, because without it i won't be a part of this awesome club

The day i picked it up :D -
Image

100% stock -
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After a couple of months little things started changing, just couldn't help myself :wall: -

Image

And then my 1st track day with the club :D

Image

Soon after the Sandown trackday i knew some things needed to change to make the car more enjoyabe. First was the brake pads and brake fluid, swapped the zero feel/bite oem pads for Poject Mu HC800 and instantly made a huge difference to braking confidence. Brake fluid i chose are Castrol React Performance Dot 4, as they are good value and offer high wet/dry boiling points which are sufficient for our sprint days imo. And i also got myself a set of used GRB STI Spec R wheels, 18x8.5 +55, BBS Forged wheels to put some better tyres on for track use. Tyres i chose were Hankook RS3 having done some research it showed that they were one of the best performing and good value Extreme Performance Tyre on the market.

Image

Image

Image

Also got a pair of Whiteline camber bolts to dial in more neg camber at the front, and Ralph at TruTrack installed and aligned the car. With the new wheels, tyres and brake pads/fluid, and new alignment settings, the subsequent trackdays i did with the club are way more enjoyable and the car and i were setting some competitive times in street class.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I also installed a Cusco brake cylinder stopper and a Perrin shifter stop to improve feel.

Image

Image

By the end of last year, the track and mod bugs have really taken hold and i decided to get a set of refurbed 08+ STI Brembo calipers, new DBA 4000 rotors, Goodridge brided brake lines and fresh HC800 pads. The MY15 WRX now uses the same hub size as the STI , so they were pretty much bolt on.

Image

Image

Next were MCA coilovers when i saw that they had a sale one during WTAC, so i went ahead and bought the X-Race series that came with 8kg front and 7kg rear springs.

Image

I chose to have Centreline suspension install the MCAs and setup the car because they have a good reputation and also being 15mins away from my home which helps when i need advice or setup changes.

Image

Image

After setting it up i went to a Tampered Motorsports Winton trackday to see how the car felt and to take some notes. Even on a 30deg day and street valving settings i managed to set a PB. Track felt very greasy and at Turn 8 the driver's side tyre was skimming the guard liner. So those are things to look into and improve on.

Image

Image

Image

Having had the car for close to 2 years now i really wanted a bit more power. So i got a Grimspeed J Pipe from the US after some research and got it through Adam at Tuspeed, a Process West Verticooler, and while the intercooler was going to come off i decided to do the pitch stop mount and also the soft oem transmission mount so ordered Group N items as replacement. Aleck at GotItRex did the fitting of parts (including Brembo conversion) and a tune to round off the mods, giving me a bit more go from the 2 litre direct injected twinscroll engine.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

And the latest mods i got were another set of used wheels (sold the oem 17s and dark grey STI Enkeis in one of the earlier pics), got a used set of Rays Gramlights 57DR in 18x8.5 +38, and 4 x Hankook Z221 C5 in 245/40/18. These are for the 2016 season and i am hoping to be competitive in Clubman Class this year which is probably the most competitive class with many modified 2.5litre STIs and WRXs dwarfing my 2 litre WRX a little. :)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Plans for the near future is a more supportive driver's seat and being a street car i have concluded that i should get something like this, which is expensive but i wanted something with airbag and reclineable to remain street friendly and still be able to tackle the track with. One day when / if the car turns into a full on race car, i will be all in ie. Race seat, cage, harness, HANs etc.. punk

Image

Hope you all enjoyed reading a little about my MY15 WRX and i will update this thread as i do more things to the car popcorn

Thanks Shane! :) You are right about power not being everything though, just look at the BRZs and MX5s they are lightweight sportscars with smaller engine outputs that still spanks a lot our butts at the track. Can't wait to hit the track soon to see how the car feels. Still got some fine tuning and adjustments to do i believe, from engine tuning to suspension and tyres so can't wait

Thanks guys, excited to see what I can do but it's only the beginning, will take a bit of tweaking , the suspension especially, also the new tune for the FA20DIT platform.

Engine power is only around 175kw atw (20% increase from stock) at Got It Rex's dyno so about as much as a stock EJ257 STI i think, but I haven't run it at the track with this tune yet so might need to do some data logging at PI and maybe not go flat out for consequitive laps yet.

Got them from Russell at Motorsports Tyre Vic, that size is $450 each. You might find cheaper from parallel importers , i tried but none in stock.

Installed a Invidia Q300 catback a couple of days ago, love it so far, looks great and its not too loud other than cold starts, would still wake the neighbours. The exhaust note is different, having equal length headers and being a FA20DIT. Performance? I think i lost 10kw atw from the extra weight and car running richer lol My tune hasn't been optimised just yet, but probably won't see anymore power even if tune revised.

Added a couple of cosmetic items :giggle:

And the Cobb Accessport with custom Got It Rex tune

And a couple of youtube videos of the Cobb Accessport :) Launch control is great, but not so sure about flat foot shifting, feels harsh (so does launch control :p) but the main thing is it feels quite unnatural to me and every gear change feels like its putting a little extra strain on the drivetrain. Maybe I am just not used to it.

And more fully sik mods, this one from Perrin will add 15hp and 10tq :giggle:

Image
Image
Image

Also decided to raise the front end 10mm after discussing my setup and car behaviour with Centreline. Will test the car soon at Winton and hoping it will help with some of the understeer. Normally you would do the opposite and raise the rear end but i suspect my issue is more complex than that as the rear ride height was already higher so i thought lets start with raising the front end. Immediately after raising the front end the steering felt more responsive just on street and through roundabouts but understeer still present, but whether there's more or less at track and what type (turn in, mid corner or exit) will be determined when i test it out at Winton. Could be the way i drive too contributing to understeer. Next move could be to fit slightly stiffer rear springs.

After raising front end a little.
