GD Bug Eye WRX OEM cooler

The aim with the water injection pipe setup is to see if I can match or exceed the performance ( intake temp and power ) of the Bug eye cooler.... I know water injection would never match the capabilities of a Process West cooler, but if it works , its just another option.

process west doesn't cool better it flows better, its a trade off between cooling and pressure drop so pick cooler for application

Sooo really before any real mods and or testing can be done I really need to be able to tune it. Yay for 99-00 ecu's said no one ever.

Im looking at a Direct plug in Link G4+ also a Haltech Elite 750 or Platinum sport 1000 with patch loom. Anyone got any stories to share or advice ? Local Subaru dyno shop can tune any of them.

Hey people, Im considering getting a silicone intake for the 99. I dont really want to spend the coin on an AVO one so im wondering if anyone has had any success with any of the cheaper ones.

Please state the brand and how well it fit, if you have an option for me. Cheers.

buy the AVO .. dont go near ebay ones, they have been known to suck shut as well as being a pretty poor fit, I have the Pro speed racing one on my GC8 now and am pretty unhappy with it, fitment was pretty bad, I ended up picking up the AVO with the intention to install it when i get the chance.

In terms of installing it, have a shop do it, its a pain in the ass doing it without taking the manifold off, and if you intend on doing it with the manifold off, it can be tricky and time consuming. Most shops will charge a few hundred to install and shops like ichiban and rumble shack here in sydney install these all the time so they shouldnt have any issues.

Remember: do it once, do it right. there is no point in getting a cheap one for $100 when it'll take longer to install and at the end may not fit well, where as you can spend the extra $200 to get a good quality one that is guaranteed to fit.

Whilst undertaking the timing belt and water pump job ive decided to pull the motor out and do every water and fuel line amid other things as they are all pretty old and generally crap. For reliability's sake

So im slowly getting all of this back together. The heat shield was all cracked and broken round the up pipe so i got rid of it and sandblasted it , painted in hi temp black and wrapped it too.

make sure your rocker cover gaskets don't leak as the heat wrap will absorb the oil and you could have a fire

Good point Ryano...... Something else I did find that was my PCV valve was blocked and not moving at all. A good soak in brake cleaner and compressed air and its as good as new. (Perhaps the problem to my surging. Un-metered air. ?? )

Anything else I want to slot in.... Yep Cosworth built 2.5L and six speed for sure ...lol Or perhaps a full forged H6 3.0L and GTX35 @ 20psi

Im nearly ready to drop this motor back in. And to assist in doing that ive made some lifting points out of some square tube cut in half , and holes drilled to suit the intake manifold flange pattern. When my AVO intake turns up, ill be able to put it and the intake manifold back on too. Im also getting the flywheel machined too.

Since Ive got lots of time on my hands and the AVO intake is going to be weeks away... Im going to make my own one.

Work has begun on the fabricated intake as a few bits have turned up. Im waiting on a 3.5" to 2.5" reducer to arrive tomorrow and hopefully I can complete the job over the easter break.. Here is what ive done so far.

Image

Bit of a dogs leg off the turbo. a 45* silicone bend mated to a 45* cut pipe.

Image

Image

I also machined up a couple of hose tails to add in for the various breather pipes.
