I did my MY98 with 200,000 kms on the clock on Monday. I was worried the carbon and gum in the engine was holding it together and that cleaning it out might finish it off. :clown:

I seem to have got away with it.

hmm.. had the 5k service done on the Lib yesterday @ GW, and the invoice didn't mention they had used the upper engine cleaner - it's a discretionary thing, or have they just overlooked it?

Either way, I guess it wouldn't hurt buying a can and doing it myself :)

Don't think it would be done at the 5,000 Chris, it's a schedule item at 12,500km - or 10k or whatever.
Fuel additive is every half service by discretion though - they usually supply a bottle + use one if you are on a 10k or 12.5k cycle ...

Les.

I haven't had the need to do the upper cylinder stuff myself ever - so can't advise sorry.

Call STi - they'll advise you properly

heres what the car does as a result of upper cleaner :)

Takes longer to start, and a nice smoke show

So smooth after it though, works really good.

G'Day mate, just wondering if you have done the top end cleaner on your Liberty yet? I'm still trying to find out exactly where to spray it in on the 2.5T engine that is in the Liberty GT. I took the engine cover off a while ago, but there is stuff going everywhere under there... so no wonder Subaru chose to cover it all up! I can't even find the throttle body  It's somewhat different to the layout on my mates WRP10, as the throttle body doesn't appear to be in the same spot.

What's the go with using this stuff on a 2.5 STi WRX? Is it still advisable (just done 24000)?

I just had the car serviced, and its listed as 'treat upper engine with Subaru cylinder cleaner' on the standard list of work, BUT there is no charge for the part (spray can) so I guess this means it was not done. I forgot to ask Laurie... is the upper engine spray not done anymore?

I have the can of stuff -- should I just do it? Thanks for any advice.

I'm guessing Laurie at STI?
I'm pretty certain that every general service there includes the UEC treatment.
PM Steve aka 'Sharpie' on here, as he likely performed the service!

Checked with Steve...the general servicing no longer includes the UEC treatment, so its DIY if you so feel the need. It's on my list for this weekend. :smart:

Bought the can of Upper Engine Cleaner from the Subaru dealer the other day as part of my service of the car and noticed a significant improvement in fuel economy. Managed 8.5 litres per 100kms combined city/highway driving.

Before using Upper engine cleaner for the same distance I was at 10 litres per 100kms combined city/highway driving.

The can costs under $20 and you get it from Subaru 8) You'll definatley feel the difference once you have done this to your car!! Subaru reccomends that this be done every 12,500km/6 month service. So save your self some money and do it yourself. :D

Thanks for this!
I was having some minor idle issues, and went to Subaru... Somehow (unsure exactly how) managed to score a can for free by just asking nicely :innocent: . Didnt notice much improvement through the rev's but it definitely made my idle a lot better :)

just bought one to try it out! i've just checked my 06MY WRX, has the same tube as an 01MY, but after i've removed the vacuum hose, how am i possible to spray the can up into the intake manifold? or should i spray it into the rubber vacuum hose instead?
