2003 wrx Cluster lights change

Postby Inkie » Wed Aug 06, 2014 12:43 pm

Being sick of the green wrx dash I decided to change over everything to red.
there didnt seem to be any guides on the 2003 cluster so I figured i should make one.
This is a lot scarier than it really is. Just take your time, Be careful with the dials not to move the needles or motors once apart and you will be fine.
Obviously, try this at your own risk. and this is just a workings on how i went about doing it.

Things needed.
Phillips head Screw driver
Flat Head screw driver
Nail polish remover
Swab
T5 replacement Bulbs in the colour of your choosing (these are the ones i went with) EDIT:
I've gotten sick of the cheap chinese LED's failing, So ive now made a complete switch to ones from JAYCAR. The casing was a little fat for the existing globe butts (dunno what they are actually called) i had to just give the inside of them a rub with a drill so that they fit into the dash. sorry i didnt take any pics. but I am 100% satisfied with the quality of these LEDs over the ebay ones. much brighter.

first off you need to take the cluster out.
Image
Undo the 2 visible screws in the pic

then take out the bezel. (may need to lower the steering column)
leaving you with..

undo 3 screws and then the cluster is free to take out.
put the screws in a safe place... like the floor..

unclip the 3 plugs and away we go..

This picture shows the back of the cluster. the globes we want to replace.
Ive marked which side is negative, this is important to note because LED's, unlike regular bulbs are polarity sensitive. On the LED globe itself, you will notice that one wire is longer than the other, that longer wire is the negative wire.

Unfortunately, It isnt as easy as that. In the 2003 and 04 cluster, there is a green film over the dials, this is what gives them that wonderful green tint.

now we have to get inside...
Image
undo these suckers and remove the back.

have trouble removing the back... and then notice theres still a few more clips

Image

next you will be greeted with the PCB
Image

to get this sucker out, you will need your flathead screw driver and straighten up the clips that ive circled, also theres some white clips around the outide.

next is this bit which holds in the dials. more white clips around the outsides
Image

ahh now we are finally at our destination.
Unfortunately no before shots, but it looks just like this but with green tint all over instead of white.
Image

Take a portion out. this is the temp/fuel gauges.
***IMPORTANT****
DO NO TOUCH DIALS/NEEDLES OR MOTORS!!!
this can apparently stuff them up. so just be careful, okay?

Image
now comes the fun part.
i used some nail polish remover (not mine, i swear) to soften up the film first
and applied it to the areas i want to remove the green.
Image

Then i used a flathead screwdriver to just scrape it away.
under the speedo/tacho i was able to squeeze the swab under there too.. and just rubbed with that until the green came loose.

The after picture as above. then we just put it all back together!

Put it back in the car, plug the plugs back in... think ****... how did i get this out? why wont you go back in?
then unplug the centre and left plug again so you can slip it in.
screw it all back up..

and dont forget to flick this switch off again..
Image

and we get...

thanks man. the lights arent 100% equal because theres no diffusers (you can use things like milk bottle plastic to do this) im quite happy with how it looks.
as for turning the CVAC red, there is a guide for that over on rexnet that i followed and that came up great too.
