Track day tyres

Postby neptune11 » Tue Feb 24, 2015 7:04 pm

I'm not sure what the outcome was of Saturday's gathering at Got it Rex, with the discussion on r spec tyres , re: brembo brakes, ect...??
Ultimately I'd love the upgrades, but for now, I'm thinking of doing the rotars & better PMu pads than what's already on!
So toying up between the Hankook Ventus RS-3s (which are street tyres according to the club) or the Dunlop DZSPZ2 though $65 each tyre more expensive! But maybe longer lasting?

Thoughts appreciated..cheers  :?:

Exact same setup i am going for, dba 4000 t3, braided lines, pmu pads and higher boiling point brake fluid. Contact Tuspeed for parts  although i have yet to install them, want to see what i can do on oem setup first as my own benchmark before chucking mods on the car.

Another tyre to consider is the AD08/AD08R (not sure if they are considered a street tyre by the club). They weren't on the Rspec list from CAMS.

AD08R is probably the best, and yes a street tyre too.

Last 2 years Yokohama did a 4 tyres for price of 3 at EOFY which included the AD08s. pretty good deal (if you can wait that long).

Yup, thats when my brother got them for his car.

Hankook offered the same deal on RS-3's when i got them for my car, worked out to be like $180 a corner fitted! (in 245/45/18) :D

Ran AD08's on my 86 (/BRZ) for about a year (Daily + 12 track days), then replaced with AD08R's (Daily + 6 track days). The later seemed to have a bit more grip, or maybe I just started driving faster. They're good on the street and in the wet, maybe not dead quiet (but we're not talking about a rolls here) and on the track they take an absolute beating.

Did a 1:42.6830 at Winton on the AD08R's with coilovers and brakes. Adding a catback and custom tune (98) I got to 1:55.7870 at PI before moving to Z221 semi's. I reckon those times for a street tyre with lawn mower power are pretty damn good.

Get all my tyres from Import Monster so give Aaron a buzz! I'm sure being a club sponsor he can do a deal.

Thanks for review Dave. I am torn between the AD08R, Direzza Z2 and Potenza RE11A. Watching this review http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes seems to show the Direzza Z2 having a slight edge? A better all rounder? But i guess whichever tyre i can get cheaper or 4 for the price of 3 punk There was another one comparing the Hankook Ventus RS3 version 2 (better in wet) as well, and they are all pretty close. So maybe the Hankooks will be cheapest out of all.

Just got Stuckey to quote me and its $300 each for Z2. hmmm The starspec Z2 are a slightly better compound i was told. Its between Z2 and AD08R for me as they are better when cold/wet than RS3, so more ideal as a street/track tyre. Going to get quote from Ray at Tyrepower reservoir and import monster too.

Out of interest, when Stuckey said the Z2 was a slightly better compound......better compound than what, the original Z1 tyre or some other??

the RS 3s...!!

Sorry I didn't make myself clear. The Z2 Star Spec has a different compound to the Z2. You can buy either, but performance difference would be minimal. Better to ask Stuckey again at the meet to give more details. Maybe it's a bit like AD08 vs AD08R but the Advans had quite a margin in performance between them.

The Advans seem like they have a great margin,
but unfortunately also in price...!

 Yeh i reckon it's going to be Dunlops or Hankooks for me unless the Advans can be had for similar price to the Dunlops. Does anyone have recent pricing for the ad08r and rs3?

Oh and has anyone used the Nankang NS2R? I think they are half the price of advans and dunlops and still give 70-80% of the grip. hmmm

$327 for 235/45/17 Yokohama
$399 for 245/40/18 Yokohama
And roughly around $232 for the RS 3s...

So price difference is huge, but also looking at the bigger
picture as in grip/ performance & wear??
