Re: 2016 Round 2 - Calder Park - 28th February
We are seeking volunteers to assist with Flag Marshaling on the day.
Flag marshaling provides you with access to some exclusive areas for the best spectating possible, and the chance to get right up close to the action.
Volunteers who assist will be provided with a complimentary lunch by the Impreza WRX Club Victoria
We need a total of 12 volunteers, for half day shifts (i.e. first shift 9am -> Lunch & then Post Lunch -> Track close)
If you are interested please shoot us a PM, or email at motorsport@wrx.com.au
Thanks

Re: 2016 Round 2 - Calder Park - 28th February
** URGENT UPDATE **
To meet national safety requirements of the AASA at the Calder circuit, an additional man made chicane will be placed on the back straight between Turn 5 & Turn 6 to limit competitors speed prior to entry of T6. The chicane will be constructed from water filled barriers.
Should the track be declared a wet day then an alternative configuration will be used encompassing the use of pit lane (with speed restrictions) as part of the track, avoiding the main straight where drag racing is held.

Is that due to the track condition or just the fact there's not much run off at the next brake point and or ripple strips in that area?

Bugger, I thought this was coming.
I heard it was because of lack of run off.

Re: 2016 Round 2 - Calder Park - 28th February
Hey guys, its due to the the lack of run off at T6.
From what i understand, AASA have now improved/revised their requirements which this portion of the track does not comply too.
Calder have been issued with a safety notice to rectify, but the interim work around is this chicane to limit competitors speed.
I have tried everything possible to avoid this, i.e. even asked if we could run short circuit, or reverse layout - all no good.
Unfortunately this is what we have to work with
However, the chicane could make the track a little more interesting... hehe
FWIW - CAMS will not issue club permits for this venue at all any more.

Going to make it hard to compare times to last time!
Would be awesome if one day we could do the combined circuit.

Bit of a bummer for those who wish to compare times to previous outings and/or strive for PB's etc...but hey any Track time is Good time
PS. my maiden outing at Calder (in a WRX) so shouldn't affect me too much as I'm still learning the ropes

Probably as a result of the reaming that they got in relation to Sean Edward's death at QR, where the lack of depth to the run-off area (and it is more that is at Calder for a shorter straight) was listed as a contributing factor to his death.

If they use cones like they did today with the HTCAV club track day, I doubt it will slow us down much.

Re: 2016 Round 2 - Calder Park - 28th February
What an awesome day! Didn't expect to have so much fun, and the Calder circuit does look like a scene from the apocalypse or something
, very bumpy, lots of guard rubbing. Had some pretty nice chase the car in front action with a FD RX7 and some EVOs, those things leave me for dead on the straight but in the twisties i gained on them massively
Very happy with my PB of 1:07.8 although i would still have liked my RaceChrono time of 1:06.9 to be made official lol

Re: 2016 Round 2 - Calder Park - 28th February
Thanks to the club for another great day. Kurt, Daniel, Mike & Snowy had things running smoothly as usual... you know its been a good day when you run out of petrol from so many runs
Thanks also to the volunteers for being our flaggies, was good to see a familiar face out there Kev
Zhi, I don't know how you had time to check your speed through the chicane mate, I was crapping myself every time
and very happy to be driving home still with two mirrors.
Was also great to see our group organise itself for each session so we could make sure we didn't hold anyone else up, should be more of that, thanks Rohan especially.

It was great watching all you guys going for it, your gc8 certainly has come a long way, very strong and nice driving.

Re: 2016 Round 2 - Calder Park - 28th February
Yes, agreed. Very well run day and perfect weather too.
Danny, I know what you mean with the mirrors. There were a few times where I had to check after cutting it fine just to make sure I still had them. Maybe if they'd come off I could have gained a few km/h on the main straight! I actually think that chicane introduced more risk to that area, as just as Zhi said, the left rear wheel got very close to the grass on the exit giving rise to the possibility of inducing a spin (which if overcorrected would end up in the wall).
On the very first run in Group 1 (untimed) I had a few very sideways moments coming onto the main straight as I hit the slick drag surface. Yikes.
There were also some pretty solid times people managed, even with said chicane in place. The car is really asking for some semi-slicks...
Thank you to all those that kept it running and kept us safe.

Thanks to Kurt, Daniel, Mike & Snowy for a well run day, even working around the meagre facilities at Calder e.g. no PA.
Here is a video of some of the best laps I did. I got into the 12's a few times on the official timing which was great. As you may be able to tell, understeer on the slower corners was a problem, so more camber is 'in progress' as I write this... And yes I agree with the comments about the plastic chicane... I did put the rear wheel on the grass exiting that thing and it was .... unpleasant.

Thanks to Dave for the loan of the cameras and setting them up (GoPro top-of-the-line).
