Front windows

Postby bumblebee » Wed Jan 18, 2006 11:53 am

Rob,
I have a my00gc8, yellow. I am considering getting the car tinted, three quick questions. I have noticed a curved streak that goes from the top of the window to the bottom on the drivers window, about 200mm from the rear edge of the window I think on the inside, is this normal for this model wrx? and will it be noticeable? or wear more if I get the car tinted?
Regards

If it's what I think it is, then its quite common. If you look down where the window goes, its supported by felt pads (I think inside and out, front at and rear of the window). Grime and dirt gets onto these pads and scratches the windows. I've got light scratching on my GC8 :(
Will.

...but.......but......what if Google is wrong?

Yep pad problem due to grit and/or dirt.
New glass and new pad are required.

If this is on the inside which is less common (you'll find more than likely it's on the outside) test it with a fingernail into the scratch, you should be able to feel it then advise.

Rob.

Its so faint its hard to tell Rob, there is actually 2 marks on the outside of the rear window on the drivers side.
New glass? Is that pricey and what is plexi glass?

Are you sitting down? Try about $350 a door.
Has to be a factory glass replacement...plexi would not be available plus it will scratch like all perspex badly.

Thanks for your reply Rob.
Will perspex side windows be able to be supported in the frameless doors of a GC8 if the glass was replaced? Would it wobble at track speed?

Couldn't do it in perspex or Lexan as it would have to be shaped for starters and the marking would occur immediately....back to buying glass and pad replacement and the cost to get someone like Novus to polish glass would be easily offset by new.

Thanks Rob.
Say for instance I got pre shaped polycarbonate windows from England that fit, do you think they would wobble or need support? Or their own frame?

Being frameless it would flex too much.
Buy either a good wrecker's yard stock or new.
