Suspension Clunks (Strut Tops required.....) Views/Opinions?

Postby cpitts » Sun Jan 01, 2012 10:49 pm

So, my 100K Libby GT-B has developed a suspension clunk/rattle sound. :(

I've had Resi Tyrepower look over the suspension components on a hoist whilst doing some other work and all visible components look A-OK (so no obvious breaks). They ran the rattle gun over bolts to make sure they're all tight (and they seemed to be OK).

It appears that the only component that could be at fault is the Strut Tops.

The car has OEM Bilstein springs with Bilstein shocks which still seem in pretty good nic (amazingly). I'm not going to replace these.

What have people replaced with?
For a reasonably hard street driven car, what would people recommend?
Having a look on TuSpeed it appears STi, Whiteline and a few others offerings are available. Anyone with experience on any of these.

Thanks for the rsp Sharpie. Clearly with your background you've seen more of these than I've had hot breakfasts. Were the strut tops ever an issue or just the Billies as the offender? Seems that both items get a bad rap when it comes to the rattling sound going round a round about (slowly) or up/down driveways, etc.

never replaced strut tops. Most complaints where when turning at slow speed knocking from front. Had a few get front driveshafts replaced under warranty from Doncaster - idiots, lol.

trust me on the struts  i used to replace a set of fronts daily, my warranty room was filled with the things! thing is some last 20k others up to 100k which in my wog book is disappointing.

Wow, 80K difference in death rates, that's appalling. Here's me thinking Bilstein were a reputable shock; or maybe it's just the OEM rubbish that suffers quality control issues.

It seems things stay the same, back in the early to mid 80's I used to replace Bilstein rear shockers on HDT Commodores and Magnum Statesman's under warranty due to rattles and leaks. :(
They were the no. 1 brand back then. Kev.

tuned by Sti's where the worst offenders as they sat lower and copped it harder than most. Try pulling them apart and re-greasing them might be something simple as "stickchion" if there is such a word :giggle:

Stiction, it is the correct word and is used to describe the amount of initial friction that is required to be overcome before a part will move.

I have a tuned by STI Liberty and I reckon I've got the same dreaded sound from the front. Is it dangerous to continue driving the car with this condition, whilst I source replacements or alternatives.

Also would you have any recommendations as to replacements that are a better. I want to keep the STI pink springs.

Thanks

How much would it cost to replace one of the front ones, or would it be better to replace 2, I have a 2003 wrx and it's done 112000

Good to know it's still safe to drive.

I'll wait for Adam/Tu to return from holidays and see what he thinks would be suit.

Maybe Koni??

Rang Subaru Docklands and was quoted 2 hours labour (1 hour per corner) plus the cost of parts. I haven't checked the parts cost as yet.

what about getting them revalved through quadrant or trutrack, will that fix them ?

Mine have travelled almost 100,000kms paired to eibach springs trouble free but they are now getting a bit soft so i'll be looking into getting them revalved early in the year.

Sorry for the late response. I've had a very busy week at work.

I did end up calling Ralph at Trutrack and after discussing the situation and listening to him I've decided to give them the work to rebuild my existing shocks.

Ralph commented that this is a known issue with the Liberty and the top of the shock is the issue.

A rebuild will include revalved shocks to suit my STI springs with the shocks being dyno tested.

Also included will be an all wheel alignment and wheel balance to ensure everything is spot on.

He's confident that this will fix the problem.

I'm now waiting for Trutrack to resume operation post Christmas break when I'll make an appointment to get this sorted.

Hopefully this will be a best option longer term.
