02 sti: Thudding sound when braking

Postby dcii_sir » Mon Nov 27, 2006 7:28 pm

Hi.. Not sure if anyone has this problem. I've got an 02 sti thats making a thudding sound from the rear when braking and nearly coming to a halt. I can't pin point the exact location. At first I thought it was something loose in the boot. Went and check everything and all is good. I have this problem reversing too. It is louder when I do sudden braking. This sound is really annoying me.. does anyone know what this may be ? My car is completely stock btw.

Sounds like that subframe might be moving, either safely get under the car and make sure that everything is tight, or take it to either Subaru or a Subaru specialist to get them to check it out.

Just remembered, some models around that time had faulty struts in the rear that created a knocking noise, it might be that the strut/s have failed.

Hard to know without hearing but I would check all suspension control arm bolts, swaybars, diff mounts etc, wheel nuts and brake caliper mounting bolts, also check exhaust hangers. Kev.

Yeah I have no idea what to check ...But its definately not the exhaust mounts. I dont know myself where the sound is coming from since I'm driving. I'll take it to a mechanic one of these days to get it checked out

Not quite a thudding sound, but it could be your brake pads shifting slightly when going from forwards to reverse? :?
Just a thought......

Sound

Postby dcii_sir » Mon Nov 27, 2006 8:06 pm

I just did a more thorough examination of when the sound occurs. It happens when I am going either forward or reverse on bumpy surface + braking (only sometimes). This light thudding fron the rear. Still cannot determine which side but sounds more like passenger side rear. I opened the boot.. and started bouncing my weight on the back of the car. I can hear thudding sound as well. Sounds like its from the suspension. This sound is really pissing me off :(

Either.
a) remove the dead guy from the boot
- or -
b) strut sounds like its gone

Does it do it when driving up driveways at low speeds? (try to imagine extending and compressing your suspension nice and slowly listening for any noises)

There are revised rear struts (from subaru) for that model for rebound knock..try get warranty-they might give it to you-you pay labour, they pay for parts-I got a new clutch (for shudder when cold) under warranty on my 2000WRX in 2004,only paid for labour-Just be nice :)

Sound

Postby dcii_sir » Mon Nov 27, 2006 10:07 pm

Yeah.. I think it does make noise going up and down driveways.. i get this sound when pulling into servos etc.. As for warranty. I am not sure if I still have it. Car is 2002 and its like 2006 now. Does anyone know any subaru service centres are open on Sats ? I went to the one in East Donnie but was told that the service area only open on weekdays :(

I'll add to the sounds like strut insert response.

My left front was replaced under warranty (bit of an argument) and the right front has been knocking for a year or more. Some had the trouble with the rears but mine are fronts only.

Its mainly noticeable at low speeds but I just put up with it, but its getting a bit worse.

Apparently its not a major issue, something to do with valving in the struts just making a noise. My service man tells me he's seen/heard it on different model STí's.

Similiar noise here and went to STi who told me that its the rear struts - booked in for next week.
No one mentioned warranty/charge I'm assuming its covered since my car is only 15 months old. :?

Yea, I get the same problem with the rear strut, they say some models around that year had faulty struts in the rear that create noises.
I only hear it when I'm driving real slow into driveways, over pumps. etc...
I might bring it into STi to be fixed.

Definately sounds like rear struts. I have a MY05 & have taken it back to Subaru a number of times regarding the sound. After getting a "can't find any fault" a number of times I went to a suspension shop who advised that both rear struts were siezed. Again back to Subaru with the diagnosis & after laughing at me, told me they had never heard of that happening. Convinced them to look at the struts & they replaced one! Unfortunately only fixed half the problem. After taking it back to Subaru continually for the last three months they finally replaced both rear struts (even the one they replaced previously).

Upshot is the knocking sound is finally gone after five months of grief!

romper thats terrible - it is a known problem! Which subaru did you take it to?

i think my struts are gone again! Best described as a soft 'thunking' noise when going over speed humps, driveways etc...

They have been replaced under warranty without question 2 previous times at STi docklands... am going to ask whether there is an upgrade since there is obviously a continuing fault with the current stuts.

Any ideas on upgrades for struts?

cheers

Janske.
