engine cutting out while driving

Postby vivski » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:57 am

I've had my '05 WRX for a few weeks without problems. Was serviced at STI 4 weeks ago.

These issues started happening on the weekend...
Without warning (no beeps), the car cuts out, as if disabled or out of fuel. Then without putting in a code, I can remove the key, put it back in, start the engine and everything's fine. I haven't worked out a pattern yet. Full details below.

It seems like fuel delivery (and probably immobiliser/brant system) problem.

I'd like to go in to Subaru with a better idea of what's actually going on, to help the diagnosis.
But I'm worried it could cause a serious accident! Almost got stuck on the train tracks in Moe!

If it is a faulty immobiliser, STI will want to replace it. Are there any alternative alarm systems I should be looking at?

First time:
Heading out to Haunted Hills on Sat, I stopped before Lilydale to fill up. Full tank of V-Power.
Then drove over and checked the tyre pressures.
Drove off and car was running fine until about 5km later at the turn to Warburton. Stopping at the lights, I dipped the clutch and suddenly the engine died. Tried to restart it, turned over but didn't fire up. Sat for a few seconds, tried taking the key out, opening the door, shut the door, put the key in, turned it and all good. Then 5 secs later it cut out. Turned it off, turned it on, and bingo! Kept the revs high and took off. It was fine for the rest of the (very enjoyable) drive to HH.

Second time:
About 4 drives later... pulling out from Moe, about 400m after starting the car (warm start), it cut out when crossing the train tracks. Grabbed neutral and let it roll 5m past the tracks (1m clear of the boomgate). Then a train came... A bit close for comfort! 10 secs later, key out, key in, started fine, away we go!

Third time:
Cold start this time. Got in the car, drove about 2km and this time I was going about 70km/h when it died. Tacho straight to 0, couldn't roll-start it... as if out of fuel (been there before). Pulled over, stopped the car, key out, key in, all good, no more problems.

Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come with this car.

There was a known problem with the Brant alarms, the cutting out is not uncommon.

I think Subaru did offer upgrades to something (earth wiring or wiring seperation from memory), but I don't think it was a recall, just letters to owners. (not sure, I didn't have an affected car)

Try a search and see what comes up, or call Docklands and ask them, they should have it on record if your car had been done or not.

The battery's fine. Any battery problems would set the alarm off, no?

Air intake and ECU... nothing untoward there. I did 400km on the weekend and it cut out 3 times. The rest was flawless.

It seems like an electrical fault somewhere (most likely immobiliser).

From memory, the dash goes dead. The tacho goes to '0' and I think the next light I see is the key light flashing up as I remove the key. I'll try to replicate it and watch exactly what happens. The lights come straight back on when I put the key back in and flick it to #2.

Thanks for the links, Will.

It looks like the Brant is a bit of a problem child. I might have to search for an alternative security system... suggestions welcome. hmmm

I called up STI and Tina said it's likely to be an electrical fault in one of the immobiliser units. Going to cost roughly $400 to replace either one. They obviously want to look at the car to diagnose it.

Could just as soon go and get the Brant system replaced and save the hassle.

Is there anyway to check if your car had the fix/recall done? Surely that would be easy for them to look up on the computer.
If it's a recall for a fault I'm not sure if it would be time limited or not, I would hope not.

If it has had the recall done, then for that price I'd personally ditch it and go for another alarm system.

(I miss the alarm from one of my old cars, had the electric window functions as well, brilliant for summer, and looked really cool when the windows go up as the alarm arms  )

Quick update...

I've driven the car a few times since starting this thread. Strangely enough, it hasn't happened again.

Maybe it's waiting for when I'm next on a freeway being tail-gated by a semi.

its $270 fitted for the keypad module or main alarm module. Id say its the keypad module.

Get it checked out sooner rather than later - mine cut out at 100km on Eastlink. I managed to stop but my suspected dodgy brandt came out shortly after and was replaced with an upgraed system. No problems ever since.

Thanks for the advice, Nic. I do want to get it sorted soon.
Out of interest, what's your new system?

Sharpie wrote:Id say its the keypad module.

I'm interested to know why you think it's the keypad.

I have several other questions (diagnosis, warranty, etc), so I'll call when I get a chance.

Thanks for the info. :)

Sharpie - Steve works for Subaru Docklands - he is probably right on what it is as it IS a common fault.

I had a Mongoose alarm installed cant remember the model - at Complete Audio Options on Westall Road - many club members have been there as they provide excellent service.

Had the same fault on my MY04 WRX - revs drop to zero, and engine light goes off. Cranks but doesn't start.. etc.I found that giving the centre console a whack on the left side made the engine light flick back on (alarm module is in there, to the right of the glovebox).

turns out it was a bad solder joint inside the alarm module - have since reflowed the solder joints and the problem has gone away.. :)

Details of the fix are here: http://www.rexnet.com.au/forum/index.ph ... pic=106320

Good luck :)

That sounds pretty similar to my issues. Thanks for the tip!

And now my key is playing up. The unlock key sporadically doesn't work.

It seems like the car doesn't recognise the signal from the key. Takes either a dozen (or in last-night's case, 300) presses of the 'unlock' button to get the satisfying 'beep beep'.

From searching, it looks like a common problem. I'll try chucking a new battery in the key.

On the upside, the car hasn't cut out again. I may have accidentally disabled the anti-hijack function, which could have something to do with it.

I have these same EXACT problem(s) happening to my MY02! (engine cut and keys)

And I just found out about this "Recall" today from another thread "Random engine hesitation"

http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/index ... mId/953862

I'm having my car towed to subaru penrith this week .... battery died and reset the imobiliser, but that's another issue.

Car's now booked in to visit STI. According to STI, the recall has already been done on my car.

After being completely fine for about 2000km, it suddenly happened again.
Twice yesterday the car just died. Headlights stayed on, tacho dropped to '0' and I was left to coast at 70km/h. Then about 10secs later the ignition light came on. I put it in 3rd, and roll-started the engine. All fine again.

Hopefully they can tell me why it's happening and why my key keeps randomly failing to lock/unlock the car.

Again yesterday, I hit the lock button and it was only after about 100 presses that I finally got the 'beep'.

Add this to the disconcerting suspension noise (seems like a sticky shock absorber) and the notchy accelerator pedal...
