Symptoms of a failing brandt ??????

Postby Delivan » Sat Dec 12, 2015 6:56 pm

My wife's bugeye rex has started doing strange things. It just stops..dash lights come on and power goes off. Then wont start. Turn the key and nothing happens.. The keypad has also stopped lighting up when ignition is in the acc position. I have reset it twice and still very scary to drive. It starts now without needing the code :loopy: and then a 2 minutes or 2 hours later, just stops. Turn key and dash lights come on but no lights on keypad. Turn ignition of and the keypad lights up.... I am not letting her drive it until I get to the bottom of the problem. That means she will be using mine so sooner it is sorted the better.. Any advise appreciated...

Hey Delivan,
From personal experience I would say the main module is flipping out, but I'm no expert mate.
You should be able to get it replaced for around $400 at Subaru if it is the part that's faulted.
Most dealerships will have a anti-theft systems / brant specialist on site to trouble shoot such issues.
And yeah kinda sux when it can't be trusted to start...actually quite stressful.
(who needs a bricked wrx... especially parked up where you can't get a tray tow vehicle into)

Just rip it out and get aftermarket.
They are not worth keeping.
You've done well having it working for so long.
Got rid of mine in my 06 as many owners have.

Could it be something else ?? It just seems too coincidental that the car would suddenly be experiencing total power loss at the same time the alarm started to not behave in the usual manner..

Yes could be something else.
The Brant can flip out with just low volts.
Total power loss has probably sent it into a tail spin.
Have you checked the integrity of two Ground straps?

Yes.. That was what I thought was the initial cause. The earth lead was a bit loose on the battery terminal so I took it off, cleaned it and secured it so it will now not budge. At the same time I reset the code and it seemed to work..Then 10 min down the road..the engine stopped and all the dash lights came on. It wont even recognize turning the key to the start position and wont allow windows to work, just as if the brant was waiting for the code..

Ok
So the ground to block & chassis are all good too?
From what you describe I'm thinking it's the actual key module (or power to/from) that's the problem now.

There was an earthing issue in the alarm that use to cut everything out.
They brought out an earthing fix I think.

I had the same issue with the missus bugeye. Unfortunately for us, we had 2 issues. One was that the brant alarm was rooted and the other was that the uppipe cat had died and taken out the turbo.

I would get rid of the brant first as it will fail at some point in time and then see how you go.

Apparently the Brant can have a problem where it randomly turns off the fuel pump. That seems to be the case with ours.. Fortunately the workshop I take the cars too is familiar with the problem and knows which wires to cut and rejoin to bypass that problem without having to remove the entire system. They tried to explain how to do it over the phone but I started to get a bit nervous taking to the wiring loom with side cutters so I have arranged to get it taken on a flat top over to the workshop in the morning. I have the glove box/dash out and the loom all exposed so it will be an easy job for Russell to bypass the offending circuit and fix the problem without removing the entire system . I don't really want to loose the remote lock/unlock etc. I will update when sorted... I am soo glad my rex has an Alpine alarm...

Sounds like it is a problem with the anti carjack sequence.
Glad you have a good workshop that can take care of it mate.
Keep us posted please.
Hope it's all sorted by cob tomorrow.

Yehaa.. Brant is all gone.. It was as I suspected from reading posts from ages ago. The problem was a dry cracked solder joint on the Brant Control unit. Over time the high temps caused by too many things getting their power from undersized wires and componants, over heats and cracks solder joints.. EG...the entire "accessories" function for window winders, fuel pump etc may run through one small componant. This just causes the overheating. We could have actually repaired the controller box by removing and redoing the solder on the appropriate componanant that were cracked. That would have fixed it for a while, but sooner or later it would have done the same thing again..
Not all Brant installs are the same.. The cars arrive in OZ without a Brant and they are installed in some big shed somewhere by Contractors hired to do the job by Subaru. The company IO used to work for used to do installs of stuff on the poker machines when they arrived.
Here is a photo of the Brant controller board and you can actually see the dry cracked joints and over heated tracks on the board in the rear of the pic. There are 2 large terminals with black tops and the base around them looks cracked.. Those are the culprits causing the problem.

Anyway.. the alarm still functions, as does the flashing lights and remote door open /close , just no more need for keypad...

Glad you got it sorted mate.
Playstation 3's actually suffer a similar problem with heat & cracking solder joints between the cpu's & motherboard.
Results in the dreaded YLOD locked state (yellow light of death)
Pretty simple fix for that though with a heat gun, solder flux pen & some thermal paste.

Here are a couple of closeups of the cracked solder joints..You can see the dark tracks leading to them, evidence of the heat...

Hey mate thanks for the info. Seems like my car has the same issues you're experiencing. Which workshop did you take your car to?

Cheers

I'm in Brisbane and we take our cars to Subievolution at Brendale. Wouldn't take them anywhere else.. They just do rexs and stis and are always busy. If you can solder well, there is no reason why you can't have a go at fixing the unit. You will see the dry/cracked joints causing the problem. You can easily just take the unit out an fix it on a bench then install and reset it. Disconnect the battery before you start.. I didn't bother as it is my wife's rex and she just wanted it fixed without any future problems, which I couldn't guarantee unless it was removed all together.. The alarm still works, the indicators still flash and it still beeps when you lock it etc, it's just the immobilizer that is removed..
