Subaru Suspected Head gasket . HELPPP PLEASEEE

Postby gencer » Fri Aug 11, 2017 3:11 pm

Hi Subi Gurus.

My Girlfriends 2009 RS Hatchback has been having some cooling issues lately.

First it started with a the radiator which i replaced thinking it might be blocked. the car still was overheating?

i went on to checking the thermostat and replacing it with a new one. = Im still having issues. (reason i replaced the thermostat is because i can feel the top hose getting hot but the bottom hose stays cold, which made me think it was stuck).

I'm stuck between the water pump or head gasket. The water will get hot and start bubbling out at the start like its got air in it then starts steaming.

Its been booked for a mechanic 2 weeks from now however i have no clue what it is and any help would be great!

P.S Oil Seems to still be clean and no mix in between the two.

Thanks everyone in advance

Need to bleed it correctly.

Bubbling from where? Top tank? That's normal.

Make sure overflow tank has adequate fluid in it.
Turn on the heater with the fan on at least low.
Start it up and squeeze the bottom hose. Just keep squeeze, let go, squeeze, let go, etc. Be very careful about the thermo fans and your arm/hand.
It should eventually start to flow normally and the heater will get hot.
Stop car, Let it cool and then open the top tank and fill as required.

Sounds like u have an airlock, common suby problem.

Buy one of these, a must have for suby coolant changes

Let it idle with some revs occasionally til it burps all air locks out the funnel, keep going for 2 thermo on off cycles. Job done.

If it still overheats, its a head gasket

Hey guys,

I have tried again too bleed it no luck. Might have to use that tool ?

Also right hand side there seems to be heaps of oil, I'll get them up tomorrow.

Thinking more it's head gasket.

Fill the radiator up, rev the car up and down, keep topping it up until the fans come on.
The moment the fans come on switch the car off and walk away. Dont mess around with anything just walk away.
Leave the radiator cap off.
After 45 minutes the coolant level should have dropped , top it up.It should take well over a litre.

There is a reason they air lock and this is a way to bleed if you dont have a filler tank.
