Make sure your jack is tight.

Other than that is the standard strut failure.

I had a noise that sounded like a suspension knock but on inspection I had found an exhaust hanger had fallen off, whilst it did not look like the exhaust could hit any of the underbody when the exhaust heats up it actually expands enough that it does hit over bumps, hanger back on good as new. I had a similar problem to this straight after getting my exhaust fitted, i would hear a knocking sound when changing from 1st to 2nd, as thats the most violent gear change, at first thought it was my gearbox clunking but then figured out it must be the exhaust hitting a part of the body, i left it for a couple of days and it disappeared, guess the exhaust re-positioned itself :D

I had a knock in my front (i know yours is in the rear ) suspension a while back...turned out to be a loose swaybar bolt so check that too.

Hope you find the problem soon 8)

The noisy rear left strut is a common problem on 03-05 WRX and STi. Take it to the dealer as they replace the struts under warranty. How do I know? Because I have just had my rear struts replaced at STi recently.

I gotta add that Vinny and the boys (Jason and Steve especially) did an awesome job! I had my rear diff replaced also under warranty and they were very courteous, they had the jobs done within specified time and were basically a real pleasure to deal with. Awesome work boys!

Yeh got Tein S-Tech springs, Yeh Mentone dickheads tried to piss me off with the lowered springs thing but this problem occurs even with stock springs. The guys at STi knew all about it though and replaced them no hassles.

Woomera Grant??? When did you move mate?

Sorry for bumping an old thread but what does the rear strut failure sound like?

I'm chasing a clicking noise thats coming from the left rear of the car and short of it being the strut I don't know what it is.

I would like to think that the guys at GT suspension know what they are talking about as their business name implies that and I believe any experienced suspension crew would know what they are doing.A very simple way of checking if its an exhaust rattle would be to get an offcut of 2x4 wood(90x45 H5for you young guys) jam it under your tail pipe drive up the road and see what happens. If it is an exhaust issue I would like to think the guys at the suspension place could show you the marks where it was hitting (witness marks).

Some guys have had some success with noisy struts by using teflon spray on the shaft but I assume that the noise will return in time.

Definitely the rear struts. I've had mine replaced twice already, free of charge on my 03. I still hear it, so just pump up the volume and you'll be fine.

06 WRX Woes

Postby wreckz » Sun Jul 15, 2007 12:19 pm

I had a problem with my 06 rex that sounds identical to this. My car was only three months old, and it started making a knocking noise somewhere around the rear passenger side suspension. The muppets at Capital Subaru in the ACT blamed my f@rking muffler upgrade (once again, wrong side of the car) for the noise. I took it back to them after they told me that they "ran a spanner over everything", as the noise just kept persisting. It only went away when I upgraded to Tein coilovers, so I will assume it was the strut/shock. A word of warning for anyone out there:

The moment you modify your rex, exercising your warranty can become an absolute nightmare.

But then again, I don't give a rat's arse, as I never intended to keep my rex stock. Based on experience, I don't have a great deal of confidence in my local Subaru representatives anyway, and would prefer to pay a suspension specialist to look at my suspension.

Please note: I found that I could reproduce the knocking noise simply by pushing the right rear corner of the car down towards the ground (i.e. exercising the suspension) with my bloody bare hands. You'd think the qualified techs at Subaru would have picked that up, but alas no. I doubt they even looked at it.

I have had similiar problems with Capital Subaru not identfying issues with noisy rear struts on my MY05. It was only as a result of research on this forum that I was able to diagnose the problem myself & go back to them to rectify while the car is still under warranty. End result is three replacement struts installed in the last 9 months.

Getting Tein SS coilovers installed in the next month as the subaru product & service is sub standard.

I have H&R springs in mine and have the knock coming from both the rear left and the front left struts...
Hoping to get Vin to look at mine next Monday on my next RDO...
