Putting the duct back on will direct cool air in there when moving.

Getting some rubber edge to put around the hole will stop rattles and also pretty much seal up from the eng bay to the inner guard as well. :-)

One question though-are you supposed to re-fit the duct that runs from the edge of the bonnet to the hole in the guard where it previously fit to the resonator?

Or are you supposed to leave it off and block up the hole to prevent hot engine air entering the guard?

I have put mine back on and there is a gap around the edge of the duct where it enters the guard as the resonator is no longer there for it to join to.

Check a few of the posts prior to your post in this thread, because depending on what model Rex you have, another option is to buy a 'Quarter Panel Plastic Plate/Plug' from a Subaru Dealership Spare Parts dept - this plastic plate will clip in and cover the entire hole.... like many other GC8 owners, my airbox relies on air from the little grill/duct below the front indicator...

I bought the part for ~$11 (to fit MY00 WRX) from Subaru Glen Waverley, fitted it, then re-fitted the air duct back on to at least give it that 'stock' (untampered) look at a quick glance. To stop the air duct rattling against the quarter panel plastic plate, I stuck some self-adhesive PVC foam (like the stuff you can use to seal gaps around windows & doors at home) on the end of the air duct
