Change the colour of your HVAC Controls, Cruise Control Switch, IC Water Spray Switch and Ignition Barrel Ring

Postby Atreyu » Fri Jan 13, 2017 9:59 am

I've been planning to change everything to red for some time now so I'll update this as I gradually finish each one.
I finally got around to do the HVAC controls which turned out perfect (image doesn't do it justice).
Literally a 10 min job taking your time.

HVAC
You can order the bulbs from ebay here: I used the T4 10mm ones which fit nicely.

Remove the cup holder
2 screws each side then slide out.
(when putting the cup holder back make sure you lift it upwards to slide in as there is a tab underneath that can easily scratch your dash if trying to force it back in).

Remove the stereo surround
Start with the top left edge and gently work your way around anticlockwise.

The HVAC is attached to the surround so just unplug the 2 wires attached to it so you have more room to work.

There are 4 bulbs that you can now access on the back of the HVAC.
Remove the bulbs with a small twist using a screwdriver.

When you put the new bulbs in they will instantly light up (check they light up before twisting to tighten with the screwdriver).
If they don't light up then turn them around as the connections need to be the opposite way. (every bulb i replaced was the wrong way around first time).

Put everything back together and your done.

Cruise and IC Spray switches use a smaller bulb so I've ordered the T3 8mm ones and I'll give them a go.
I haven't opened up the ignition barrel yet because I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm not sure which bulb that will need.

It looks very different to how the HVAC and Switch bulbs connect though so I've ordered these and I'll give it a go.

This is what the OEM bulb looks like.

Yea, same as dash lights, t5 wedge. :) It's pretty specific on size as well, hope the new ones fit ok.

Yes, and glove box and ash tray. Need T10 for boot and ~30mm festoon for map/interior. Measure them first though and get the closest festoons you can.

Ok so the cruise and water spray switches are now done using these. (order the T8)

The switches have a green backing behind them that I removed using a very fine sandpaper.
If you don't remove the green then it looks closer to orange and not the vibrant red you are after.

Ignition ring and cigarette lighter were swapped out using these.

The images aren't great but it all came out perfectly matching the instrument cluster.

The last thing will be opening up the electric window controls and working out how to change that to red.

Nice work. I've been trying to do mine and having some issues. Got a couple of questions if you don't mind:

- With the switches on the cruise control, fogs etc,how did you actually remove the switches themselves? I'm trying to get to that green film. Did the "on lights" (e.g.to indicate that cruise control is on) of any of the switches stop working for you? Mine did.
- How did you get to the cigarette lighter lights?

Hope you can help. Cheers

The CC/fog panel lights push out from behind. Need to pop the trim, just a screw on the right, and another screw under the bonnet release lever. That should give enough flex in that lower dash panel.

The cig lighter, you pop the radio surround/hvac panel off to get access.

Cheers mv75. I got the switches out no problem but it's trying to remove the green film that I'm not clear on. I was wondering if I had pop out the front of the switch somehow.
Because the red light is very faint if I just leave it.
